Abstract

In the first iteration of her autobiographical documentary film trilogy about contested identities recounts the family history of her elderly Jewish parents. In My Private Life, Daniels explores the turbulent marriage, divorce, reconciliation and old age of her parents. The film interweaves observational footage of daily lives, interviews, fictionalised enactments and voice-overs recalling the past in different tenses, edited over shots of houses, stills, home movies and a woman’s hands building a model house, offering glimpses of a complicated and turbulent family history affected by her father's unacknowledged sexuality. (Duration: 63 minutes)
